After fleeing to avoid arrest, Montag winds up joining an outlaw band of scholars who keep the contents of books in their heads, waiting for the time society will once again need the wisdom of literature.

Un livre très visionnaire, plus que d'actualité aujourd'hui. Il s'agit d'une description d'un monde ou la vie des gens est d'une monotonie déprimante : travailler pour consommer, consommer pour vivre. Les gens ne se rendent pas compte qu'ils sont dans une dictature car l'Etat a réussi a empêcher les gens d'avoir une pensée contestataire.

Brûler des livres (comme les dirigeants du IIIème Reich et de l'URSS l'ont fait auparavant) leur semble donc être un acte normal. Ainsi, ils votent a chaque élection pour conserver le pouvoir actuellement en place et l'idée de révolution ne leur vient jamais a l'esprit : le formatage est donc un des thèmes les plus mis a l'avant du livre.
